In a recent video by Vogue that was filmed in Provence, south of France, actress Angelina Jolie appeared on a mission to protect the world's bee populations. She is willing to go beyond the basics to achieve this goal.
Jolie demonstrated the process of beekeeping, dressed in a full beekeeping suit as she met the graduates of the first class of Guerlain's Women for Bees Initiative at the French Apidology Observatory (OFA).
UNESCO, OFA and Guerlain partnered in May and June 2021 to save bees as well as to educate women about the importance of bees and beekeeping. Their goal is to train 50 women as beekeepers from different parts of the world in a five year period. The goal is to repopulate approximately 125 million bees by 2025.
Jolie thought she knew something about bees, beekeeping, and training, and understood the importance of it all. She discovered that when you dig down into it, you really start to learn more.
Without OFA and beekeepers, she explained, we'd lose many honeybees. Annual bee loss is already about 30%.
In this 4:54-minute video by Vogue Angelina Jolie discusses the art of beekeeping.
When she started to work with Guerlain and became Guerlain's 'godmother' ambassador, they often spoke about bees and the company's commitment to them. Then they talked about what they could do to improve the situation.
The actress noted that she was just as worried about women as she was about the bees. She wanted to do something for them both.
The question became, what can we do for the bees and for women and what would it look like? She came up with the idea of supporting women by teaching them how to take care of the bees.
Jolie is both an actress and a humanitarian, and this year she is using her platform to raise public awareness about the plight of bees, which are the single most important pollinating insect on our planet.
Fans praised Jolie for taking this initiative. One person wrote, "God bless women and people like Angelina who live to help and uplift others in this earth instead of destroying, kill and pushing down."
Jolie will star in the new movie, "Eternals," which releases on November 5, 2021. The movie also stars Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Salma Hayek and Kit Harington. It is directed by Chloé Zhao.
She will also feature in "Every Note Played," an adaptation of Lisa Genova's romance novel. The movie is currently under pre-production.
